Drivers handling early morning fog

Drivers were handling the patchy morning fog conditions fairly safely this morning in Lawrence and the surrounding area.

âÂÂOr they were lucky. It is Monday and people are just getting back into their routines,â said Lt. John Eichkorn, a spokesman for the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Eichkorn said visibility on the roadways in Douglas County was about a fourth of a mile Monday morning. But there were no reports of injury accidents among morning commuters, he said.

âÂÂMaybe people slowed down a bit today,â he said.

Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist, said the fog, which was caused by low level clouds would leave the area in the morning.

âÂÂThis afternoon will be sunny and warm. TodayâÂÂs high will be 59,â he said.

His overnight forecast called for mostly clear skies, with the low reaching 30.

âÂÂTomorrow, weâÂÂll see a bit of this foggy stuff to start with, then it will be mostly sunny for the bulk of the day before clouds thicken up in the evening,â he said.

TuesdayâÂÂs high will be 52.

âÂÂTomorrow night, thereâÂÂs the tiniest chance for a little sprinkle of rain. Ironically, if we are to see rain, there is a slight chance to hear thunder with it,â he said.

âÂÂWednesday will be kind of a cloudy day, with light rain showers possible early but not likely,â he said. WednesdayâÂÂs high will also be 52.

âÂÂFor the rest of the week, Thursday through Saturday, weâÂÂll have a mix of clouds, mostly sunny, with temperatures in the mid 40s,â he said. The lows will be in the mid 20s.

So far, itâÂÂs been at least a month since there has been any significant precipitation in the area, he said.

âÂÂIf folks want a white Christmas, itâÂÂs going to be too warm this week, thereâÂÂs a chance next week,â he said. âÂÂThatâÂÂs why Bing Crosby sang he was dreaming of a white Christmas rather than enjoying a White Christmas.âÂÂ
