Sebelius names education leader

? Gov.-elect Kathleen Sebelius has completed the formation of her government review teams, naming a former member of the Kansas Board of Regents to examine education.

Sylvia White Robinson’s appointment was announced Wednesday. Five other teams were announced in November for a top-to-bottom review of state government.

Sebelius said the education team would begin its meetings in January and that members of the team were being selected. Robinson is also expected to serve as a key education adviser to Sebelius and attend meetings of the regents and the state Board of Education on her behalf.

Robinson is a vice president and chief evaluation officer of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. She is leaving the foundation at the end of 2002 after 11 years of service. She served on the Board of Regents from 1996 to 2000 and spent 14 years on the Kansas City, Kan. school board.

Sebelius’ teams and their meetings are the subject of an open meetings lawsuit filed by 14 news organizations, including the Associated Press and the Lawrence Journal-World, that challenge her decision to close some meetings to the public before she is inaugurated on Jan. 13. A court hearing on the issue is scheduled for today before a judge in Shawnee County.
