Chargers could hamper Super Bowl preparations

? The NFL could face logistical concerns in preparing Qualcomm Stadium for the Super Bowl if the San Diego Chargers make the playoffs and end up hosting the AFC championship game.

Although such a scenario is a long shot, the NFL is preparing contingency plans because there’s only one week between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl on Jan. 26.

“We probably haven’t ever been this close to working on the contingency plans to figure out what we’re going to get done, complicated by the one week instead of the two weeks,” Jim Steeg, the NFL senior vice president who is planning his 24th Super Bowl, said Tuesday.

With three weeks left in the regular season, the Chargers (8-5) currently are in the sixth and final playoff spot.

No team ever has played a Super Bowl in its home stadium. The Chargers have lost four of six since their 6-1 start.
