Mutombo scheduled for surgery today

East Rutherford, N.J. – New Jersey center Dikembe Mutombo, who had missed only 28 games in his previous 11 seasons, will be sidelined up to four months because of a torn ligament in his right wrist. Surgery is scheduled for today.

Shooting guard Kerry Kittles also will be out at least two weeks because of a sprained left knee.

Mutombo and Kittles were hurt during last week’s West Coast road trip. Mutombo, who was averaging 7.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, was slapped on the wrist by Eric Piatkowski of the Los Angeles Clippers on Thanksgiving. Kittles, who was averaging 12.6 points, was hurt in Portland on Saturday.

Hornets activated Drew

New Orleans – New Orleans activated reserve guard Bryce Drew on Wednesday. Drew missed the Hornets’ first 18 games after he fractured the orbital wall around his left eye on Oct. 30. The Hornets needed a replacement for Baron Davis, who has missed the last two games because of a herniated disc in his back.

Williams still ailing

Toronto – Raptors forward Jerome Williams will have arthroscopic surgery if his left elbow fails to respond to aggressive treatment in the next week. Williams has missed the last three games and is not on the team’s four-game road trip. Williams has averaged 8.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 30.1 minutes in 13 games.
