KU bench struggles

An NCAA Div. II opponent didn’t bring out the best in Kansas University’s bench on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

Non-starters scored just eight points off 1-of-14 shooting in the Jayhawks’ 97-70 victory over Central Missouri State.

Take walk-ons Brett Olson, Christian Moody and Stephen Vinson out of the equation, and it’s 1-of-10 marksmanship.

“They made some mistakes. I’m not pleased, but I’m not going to be pleased until I get them enough opportunities,” KU coach Roy Williams said of the reserves. “At some point they’ve got to step up.

“I did say, ‘Don’t give me this garbage, “I need some confidence.'” You get confidence by playing your butt off.”’

Reserve Jeff Hawkins, who had an assist, steal and block, missed five shots, including two threes in a career-high 15 minutes. Jeff Graves missed two shots and made two free throws. Moulaye Niang hit three of four free throws. And Michael Lee hit one of three shots and one of three free throws with three rebounds in a career-high 16 minutes.

Bryant Nash, who normally is a reserve but started in place of Kirk Hinrich (strained back), had a career-best eight rebounds in 25 minutes.

He hit his only shot.

“We don’t have great scorers on the bench — not somebody like Terry Brown, or last year with Keith and Wayne,” Williams added of Keith Langford and Wayne Simien, who had 23 and 22 respectively versus the Mules.

“Scoring is not a strength of the bench. I’ve always felt you can really help us if you don’t hurt us, and that’s what they have to do on a consistent basis.”

Williams is trying to get 6-6 junior Nash plenty of minutes. Nash, who made his first career start, logged 25 minutes Wednesday.

“Bryant needs to relax. I told him, ‘I can’t pour you a drink and make you relax. You’ve got to do it yourself,”’ the coach quipped. “The pressure : no one understands unless you’ve played the game.”

Hawkins said the bench is trying its best to help the team.

“This was an opportunity with Kirk out to show we can step up and keep the intensity we’d have if Kirk was in the game,” Hawkins said. “We executed our plays a little better. I am getting more confident every game. I was a lot more confident out there tonight. The biggest thing is, we come in and execute and play our principles.”

“I think Michael Lee did really well,” added Langford. “He came in and played very hard, especially on defense. All the guys are trying to come in and maintain. That’s what coach wants them to do.”
