Tulsa’s coach resigns; Ball State’s fired

? Tulsa football coach Keith Burns announced his resignation Monday after going 7-28 in three seasons.

Burns went 2-21 the last two seasons, including 1-11 this year.

“The bottom line is that we didn’t win enough games,” Burns said in a statement. “To have the opportunity to be a head coach on the Division I-A level was a dream of mine. Only 116 other coaches had the opportunity to do that. I’ve been extremely blessed and very fortunate.”

The 42-year-old Burns met last week and Monday with Tulsa president Robert Lawless and athletic director Judy MacLeod for his annual performance review.

MacLeod said Burns made the decision to resign, and that neither she nor Lawless tried to talk him out of the decision.

“I think he had made up his mind,” she said. “No one has been happy the past two years with how our football team has played, not the coaches and not the players. Now we can move on and find someone who can make an impact on this program.”

Tulsa lost 17 consecutive games under Burns before beating Texas-El Paso 20-0 on Oct. 26.

Kansas University beat Tulsa, 43-33, on Sept. 28.

Burns told the team about his resignation during an emotional meeting Monday.

“I love the guy,” quarterback Tyler Gooch said.

Ball State fires Lynch after 8th year

Muncie, Ind. – Bill Lynch was fired as Ball State’s football coach Monday after producing only two winning seasons in his eight years at the school.

He will be reassigned to an unspecified job within the university for the final year of his contract, athletic director Bubba Cunningham said.

Lynch had a 37-53 record at Ball State, with his only winning seasons coming in his first two years. The Cardinals lost 21 straight games in 1998-00, which at the time was the nation’s longest losing streak.

Ball State finished 6-6 this season after Saturday’s 38-14 loss to Marshall.
