The Lawrence 299ers Duplicate Bridge Club met Aug. 21 for its weekly lesson and game at the Douglas County Senior Center. The game was a qualifier for the North American Open Pairs Championship. The game used the Howell movement and was directed by Don Brennaman. Chuck Hedges and Bob Anderson placed first. Artie Shaw and Harriet Olson finished second, and third place went to Helen Huffman and Bob Huffman. Judy Bevan and John Gilbert finished fourth, and Mike Montgomery and Rhonda Montgomery finished fifth. All of these pairs qualified for the club championship round, which will be next month.

The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met Aug. 23 for its weekly game at the Douglas County Senior Center. Nine tables competed, and a Mitchell movement was used. The game was a qualifier for the North American Open Pairs championship. It was stratified and directed by Don Brennaman.

First place North-South winners were Julia Brooks and Wanda Durbin in Strat A and B. Madelyn Jenks and Phyllis Brownlee finished second in A and B and first in C. Judy Bevan and Linda Heavin were third in A and B and second in C. Gladys Dixon and Adeline Towle placed fourth in A and B. Mike Montgomery and Rhonda Montgomery took fifth in A and B.

Sally Taylor and Klee Zaricky finished first in A, B and C, playing East-West. Second place in A and B went to Jim Gunn and Harry Shaffer. Virginia Seaver and Bob Anderson placed third in A and B. Meredith Docking and Bebe Huxtable finished fourth in A and B and second in C. Clyde Romer and Kent McCullough finished fifth in A and B. Larry Smith and Kedall Wolf finished sixth in A and B and third in C. All pairs qualified to advance next month for the Club finals.

The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club’s Aug. 26 game attracted nine tables. The game was stratified, used the Mitchell movement and was directed by Virginia Seaver.

The North-South winners were led by Terry Tolar and Vince Russo, followed by Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough. Clyde Romer and Steve Phelps placed third, followed by Jerry Sloan and Patt Radford. The winners in the B and C Strata were Martie Hartman and Pat Burgstahler.

The East-West winners were led by David Rhea and Christie Thomas, followed by Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd who placed second in A and first in B. Phyllis Brownlee and Mona Bell placed third in A, second in B and first in C. Paul Heitzman and Donna Johnson placed fourth in A. Emily Foster and Michael Green placed second in C.
