Old home town – 100 years ago today

On Aug. 21, 1902, the Lawrence Journal editorialized: “This is the anniversary of the Quantrill’s raid. The details of that terrible and indefensible massacre have been told and retold, and its history is a part of the struggle made by the South for the retention of human slavery. To the present generation it seems utterly incomprehensible that neighbors with no personal animosity should fall upon neighbors and kill and murder in cold blood and without mercy. Those who were young or yet unborn when this horrible butchery took place can but look upon it as they look upon the horrors of the French revolution, as an act that was committed by men whose characters they cannot comprehend, and whose deeds are recorded with those committed by uncivilized men in the dark ages.”
