Seabury Academy cross country coach Jill Boyle couldn’t have been more pleased with the team’s first practice.

“It went well,” Boyle said. “Thank goodness it wasn’t that hot, and moving to Haskell was a nice change.”

Last year, the Seahawks ran out by their school, east of Lawrence on 1850 Road. The move to the Haskell Indian Nations University campus brought more shade, less dust and safer trails for the team’s 13 runners.

Their first meet isn’t until the Wamego Invitational on Sept. 14, so Boyle has her runners set to mix in some long, easy runs with hill workouts and shorter repeats until then.

Volleyball

Second-year coach Tracy Kitson only had seven players at her first volleyball practice, but expects that number to rise as more students turn in physicals.

Still, Monday’s practice at East Lawrence Community Center brought about the usual first-day-of-practice rituals: preseason pep talks, determining who will play where and drilling again and again.

The Seahawks will open their season Sept. 3 at Topeka Cair Paravel, the first of eight away events before their lone home match Oct. 11.
