Riling services

Services for Eugene C. Riling, 72, Lawrence, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Riling died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Lawrence, the son of John J. and Hazel (Harrison) Riling. He graduated from University High School in 1947 and Kansas University in 1951.

Mr. Riling was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War. He returned to Lawrence and completed law school in 1956. He practiced law in a family business started by his uncle in 1900. He argued numerous cases in front of the Kansas Court of Appeals and the Kansas Supreme Court, 38 of which resulted in precedent-setting opinions. He was admitted to the Kansas Bar Assn. in 1956 and admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, District Court of Kansas.

He was a member of Delta Theta Phi fraternity, Knights of Columbus, Douglas County Bar Assn. and Kansas Trial Lawyers Assn., serving on its board of governors from 1974 to 1975. He served on the council at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and as chairman for the March of Dimes. He was also a member of Lawrence Country Club and won its golf championship several times.

He married C.B. Markeson on Dec. 22, 1951, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Joanie Riling, Susie Brooks and Judy Riling, all of Lawrence; three sons, Jerald, Michael and Timothy, all of Lawrence; a sister, Patricia Smith of Lawrence; and eight grandchildren.

A wake will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

The family suggests memorials to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, the oncology department at Lawrence Memorial Hospital or Hospice Care of Douglas County. They may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
