Lieutenant governor returns to banking

? Kansas Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer has joined Gold Banc Corp., a Leawood-based banking company, as executive vice president of bank administration, the bank announced Friday.

Sherrer, 61, will serve as lieutenant governor until his term expires Jan. 13. But he will step down as secretary of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing.

The commerce and housing job pays $109,870 per year. The lieutenant governor job pays nearly $27,000. Lieutenant governors typically have had private-sector jobs while carrying out their limited governmental duties. Sherrer said his first day at Gold Banc would be Oct. 1.

Gold Banc is the parent company of Gold Bank, a banking chain with 49 offices in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Florida. The company has $3.3 billion in assets and has grown largely through a series of acquisitions over the last few years.

Sherrer comes from a banking background. From 1981 to 1995, he was a senior vice president of Wichita-based Fourth Financial Corp., then the largest bank holding company based in Kansas. Before joining Fourth Financial, Sherrer was chief marketing officer of Capitol Federal Savings in Topeka from 1976 to 1980.
