Experts offer tips to survive

First-time college students are faced with an abundance of new experiences when they arrive at Kansas University. They have to decide where to hang out, who to hang out with and what, where and when to study.

Some veteran KU students share what they wish they had known when they arrived in Lawrence. This is what they say is hot on the hill.

Where is best place to study on campus?

“I’d probably just go with the library. I hear it’s a good place to study, but I never go there, personally. I don’t study that much.” Â Joel Broxterman, Topeka senior

“Your bedroom, because you don’t get distracted.” Â Crysta Redwine, Tulsa, Okla., junior

“For me, outside on grass anywhere, on a nice sunny day, because our campus is so pretty. It’s really nice and calm and serene. Nobody will bother you outside.” Â Beth Dyer, St. Marys junior

“Watson Library, on the top floor. It’s always really quiet, and there are comfy couches there.” Â Brooke Yingling, Atlanta sophomore

What is the easiest major at KU?

“Probably communications because you don’t have to take a lot of the math classes.” Â Lester Smith, St. Louis, May graduate

“Sociology. The sociology course I took … I put no effort into the class, and I passed. It covers stuff that’s pretty general.” Â Broxterman

“Probably undecided. A lot of people also make fun of political science majors. They don’t have homework.” Â Josh Johnson, Lenexa junior

“Sports majors, like those people who want to be professional refs and stuff.” Â Amber Koelzer, Corning senior

What is the hardest major?

“I think the hardest major is engineering, because they have so many projects due, and they have to make so many models. They work really hard on those models.” Â Elisa Willems, Lawrence sophomore

“I’d say business is pretty hard because it’s pretty competitive. A lot of people are always trying to get into the school of business.” Â Abbey Ferris, Abilene junior

“Anything in the medical field is pretty hard to get into at KU. They don’t let very many people in, and they keep cutting more people each year.” Â Jessica Robbins, Lawrence junior

“Math major. Math is hard.” Â Redwine

What is the prettiest place on campus?

“Potter Lake is the prettiest, because it’s quiet and peaceful, and there aren’t too many dogs. You can do your homework there when it’s sunny.” Â Willems

“Potter Lake is so polluted. I like the area behind Blake Hall, where there’s a lookout bench.” Â Matt Rice, Kansas City, Mo., senior

“I’d have to say the fountain because … sometimes people pour bubbles in it and you can see them overflowing.” Â Smith

“I always walk behind the Arts and Design Building  behind the shop  and you can see really far out.”  Koelzer

What is the best residence hall?

“Naismith. That’s where I lived, and, compared to other ones, it seems to be the cleanest. You only have to share a bathroom with one other room.” Â Ferris

“I like Oliver; that’s where I lived. It’s not the best (living quarters), but it’s really fun. There’s a big variety of people who like to go out and have a good time.” Â Robbins

“Templin, because they had a renovation recently, and it’s a four-person suite. There’s … ample space.” Â Broxterman

What is the best place to grab a snack on campus?

“I’d probably have to say Yello Sub. They have great sandwiches, and it’s a pretty popular place for kids to go.” Â Broxterman

“In the Kansas Union. There are always a lot of people. The snacks are OK, but mostly you can see all your friends there.” Â Yingling

“Wescoe Terrace. It’s right there in the middle of campus, and it’s easy to run down there, grab it and go.” Â Dyer

What is the best place to throw a Frisbee?

“Where they’re building the new Robinson. We used to go out there and throw a Frisbee and play softball.” Â Johnson

“On the hill. That’s where I see the most people doing it.” Â Ferris

“The Frisbee team practices in front of Allen Fieldhouse.” Â Robbins

“The lawn in front of Lindley. Once it gets nice outside there are people throwing a Frisbee out there every day.” ÂDyer

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

“Try to meet as many people as you can and experience as many things as you can. Don’t get caught up in one little clique.” Â Ferris

“Get it right the first time because you’re paying your own money.” Â Smith

“Even if they don’t take attendance in class, don’t get carried away and (miss) class all the time.” Â Yingling
