Coalition commemorates Hiroshima anniversary

The Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice had its commemorative vigil for the 57th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Attendance at the noon rally Tuesday at Ninth and Massachusetts streets topped out around 45 people.

Coalition founding member Louise Hanson said the rally was particularly significant at a time when the United States was considering invading Iraq.

Planning commissions: Public comments taken for Transportation 2025

A public comment meeting on the final draft of Transportation 2025, the city-county long-range transportation master plan, will be 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at the East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.

The draft includes an evaluation of existing conditions, an examination of issues prompting the update, and recommendations for bicycles, pedestrians and transit networks and facilities, as well as a discussion of roadways and congestion management.

Comments will be submitted to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission for its Aug. 28 meeting. Recommendations will be forwarded to the city and county commissions.

Kansas university: Justice Thomas to visit

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will visit Kansas University this fall.

Thomas will be on campus Oct. 28-29 to speak to classes and meet with students. Steve McAllister, the dean of the KU School of Law who clerked for Thomas, said details of the visit hadn’t been completed.

Thomas last visited KU in spring 2000. Other justices who have visited KU in recent years include Antonin Scalia, who was on campus in November 2001, and Stephen Breyer, who came in January 2001.
