NFL Camps: Jets’ defensive end sprains knee

Abraham plans to be in lineup when New York opens season at Buffalo

All-Pro defensive end John Abraham of the New York Jets sprained his left knee in practice Saturday, but plans to be in the lineup when the team opens its season in less than five weeks.

An MRI examination Monday revealed a second-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament, and the team estimated he will be out 4-to-6 weeks.

Abraham thinks otherwise.

“I’m confident I’ll be back before the first game in Buffalo,” Abraham said.

“I’m shooting for the last preseason game or the first game. I feel I’ll be ready in four weeks.”

A 2000 first-round draft pick from South Carolina, Abraham is being counted on to provide the bulk of the Jets’ pass rush. Last season, he finished second in the AFC with 13 sacks.

Browns: Rookie running back William Green was kept out of practice on Monday by the Cleveland Browns, who don’t want to take any chances with their first-round draft pick. Green hurt his right shoulder during practice against the Buffalo Bills on Friday in Rochester, N.Y., and although X-rays were negative, the Browns sat him for Saturday’s scrimmage as a precaution.

He didn’t participate in any contact drills on Monday, either, as the Browns prepare for their exhibition opener on Saturday at Minnesota.

Patriots: The New England Patriots’ new $325 million field will be called Gillette Stadium, ending the team’s association with Internet holding company CMGI.

The deal with Boston-based Gillette Corp. is for 15 years. The cost was not announced.

CMGI agreed to pay $114 million for naming rights to the stadium in 2000, when its stock was trading at $44 per share.

Niners: San Francisco 49ers rookie cornerback Michael Rumph pleaded innocent Monday to driving under the influence, and a warrant for his arrest was revoked.

Rumph did not appear in court and his attorney, Scott Hecker, entered the plea for him. A trial date has not been set.

Rumph was a member of the University of Miami national championship team last year and was taken in the first round of the draft by the 49ers. He reported to training camp last week after signing a five-year, $6.4 million contract. Also, Ron Stone, a two-time Pro Bowl guard in his first season with the 49ers, will miss 2-to-4 weeks of training camp because of a sprained elbow.

Buccaneers: Tampa Bay receiver Keenan McCardell sprained his left knee during a passing drill Monday and could be sidelined for up to a week. McCardell was injured when he got tangled with cornerback Brian Kelly making a catch in the end zone.

Seahawks: Former Seahawks receiver Brian Blades pleaded innocent Monday to charges stemming from brawl at a restaurant last month.

Blades pleaded innocent to resisting arrest with violence and interfering with a police officer, both third-degree felonies, and disorderly intoxication, a misdemeanor. Four others were also arrested.

A trial date has not been set, said Ed Griffith, spokesman for the Miami-Dade County State

Chargers:It doesn’t appear the team and rookie cornerback Quentin Jammer will reach an agreement any time soon.

The Chargers faxed a fresh proposal to Mike Sullivan, the agent for team’s first-round pick. But Sullivan wasn’t encouraged.

“They said this deal is similar to what they gave LaDainain (Tomlinson) last year,” Sullivan said. “But somehow they forgot to include the $4.5 million in guaranteed salaries.”
