Red Sox make moves to make room for Floyd

Arlington, Texas The Boston Red Sox released Jose Offerman on Thursday to make room for Cliff Floyd and must pay the first baseman more than $4.1 million that remains on his contract.

In another move, right-hander Willie Banks was designated for assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket to open a roster spot for newly acquired right-hander Bob Howry.

Offerman reacted angrily when general manager Mike Port informed him of the decision. Offerman also yelled a profanity at reporters who were in the clubhouse, blaming them in part for his release, and threw equipment.

“Why didn’t you tell me when I was in Los Angeles?” Offerman screamed at Port, who delayed the announcement until the team was in Texas in case Floyd had been unable to join the Red Sox on Thursday.

Indians activate Fryman from DL

Seattle The Cleveland Indians activated third baseman Travis Fryman from the 15-day disabled list Thursday.

Fryman had been out since July 17 because of an inflammation in his right shoulder. To make room for Fryman on their 25-man roster, the Indians optioned outfielder Ben Broussard to Triple-A Buffalo.

Fryman, who is hitting .226 with eight homers and 39 RBIs in 82 games this season, was in the lineup Thursday night for the start of a four-game series in Seattle.

Trade returns Neagle to starting rotation

Denver Colorado Rockies left-hander Denny Neagle is back in the rotation, thanks to John Thomson’s trade to the New York Mets.

“I don’t know what to say. I certainly didn’t want it to happen this way,” Neagle said. “If anything, I had hoped that I was the one who would get traded and these young guys would stay here. But what can you do?”

The Rockies dealt Thomson and outfielder Mark Little to the Mets Wednesday for outfielder Jay Payton, right-hander Mark Corey and minor league outfielder Robert Stratton.

Neagle’s return to the rotation followed his worst outing as a reliever. He was 4-7 with a 5.92 ERA after the Rockies lost 4-1 to Pittsburgh Tuesday.

Philadelphia’s Person to have shoulder surgery

Philadelphia Philadelphia pitcher Robert Person will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a small tear in his right shoulder on Tuesday.

Person, who went on the 15-day disabled list on July 23, could miss the rest of the season because of the injury, the Phillies said Thursday.

He underwent an MRI on his right shoulder in April and showed a small tear. He had two MRIs on July 24, one on the shoulder and another on his elbow, which revealed the same tear and elbow inflammation.

Angels activate Molina

Anaheim, Calif. Catcher Bengie Molina, who recovered much faster than expected from a strained left hamstring, was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday by the Anaheim Angels. Infielder Jose Nieves was designated for assignment to make room for Molina on the roster.
