LHS softball sweeps

Outhit in opener, Lions collect 13 hits in Game 2

Lawrence High coach Reenie Stogsdill wasn’t happy with her team after its 5-2 win in the first game of a softball doubleheader against Leavenworth on Monday at Holcom Park.

Sure, senior pitcher Ashley Burnett baffled the Pioneers as she struck out seven and tossed a complete game.

Lawrence High's Ashley Burnett delivers a pitch. Burnett was the winner in Game One of the Lions' sweep of Leavenworth on Monday at Holcom Park.

But as good as Burnett’s pitching was, the Lions’ hitting was as bad.

LHS (7-7) mustered just four hits and missed too many scoring opportunities, Stogsdill said.

The Lions had the bases loaded with no outs in the first inning, but scored just once and stranded three runners.

“We aren’t hitting the ball well right now at all,” Stogsdill said after the first game. “I think offensively we didn’t do what we should have done.”

That changed in Game Two as the Lions pounded 13 hits off Leavenworth (2-10) pitcher Stephanie Files.

Five Lawrence players had multi-hit games. LHS sophomore Teal Meyer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Burnett added two doubles and an RBI.

“We should’ve had so many more hits in the first game,” Burnett said. “We’ve been struggling hitting and we wanted to show the coaches that we can hit the ball. That’s what we did in the second game.”

Leading by 4-2 in the fifth inning, Lawrence sent 10 batters to the plate and blew open what had been a close game. The Lions scored five runs on five hits, including doubles by Burnett and Meyer.

Burnett relieved senior pitcher Larissa Johnson in the top of the fifth inning and earned the save.

“That’s something I do a lot,” Stogsdill said. “Ashley’s our No. 1 and she’s a power pitcher. When other teams start getting to our other pitchers I bring her back.”

The Pioneers opted to stick with Files for the duration of the second game, instead of using Heather Eagle, who pitched in the first game. Stogsdill said she didn’t think the pitching change had anything to do with Lawrence’s offensive improvement.

“I think we just came out and hit the ball a lot better in the second game,” Stogsdill said. “Both of their pitchers were pretty equal, it was a matter of our girls getting the job done and we did.”

Leavenworth mounted a rally in the seventh inning when its first three batters singled, but the Pioneers scored just one run in the inning.
