American League Roundup: Baez halts Indians’ skid

Cleveland snaps six-game losing streak, 4-2

? Since leaving Cuba, Danys Baez has acclimated to American life.

He can’t get used to the weather.

Cleveland pitcher Danys Baez pitches to Chicago batter Frank Thomas in the first inning. The Indians won, 4-2, Monday at Jacobs Field in Cleveland.

“Never like Havana,” Baez said, pulling on a turtleneck sweater. “It was cold, but at least not snowing.”

Baez (3-1) pitched 51*3 shutout innings in the chilly conditions and Travis Fryman and Russell Branyan homered as Cleveland snapped a six-game losing streak Monday night, beating Chicago, 4-2.

Finally home after going 0-6 and getting swept in Chicago and Minnesota, the Indians improved to 7-0 at Jacobs Field and ended their longest losing skid in two years.

“It’s definitely nice,” said Branyan, who hit a two-run homer off Mark Buehrle (4-1). “Hopefully, we can return the favor. They swept us at their place, and we’d like to do that here.”

Fryman also hit a two-run homer off Buehrle, who had gotten an average of nine runs of support in each of his first four starts. He allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings.

“Two bad pitches,” Buehrle said. “I’ll take an outing like this any time.”

Mariners 16, Angels 5

Seattle Mark McLemore hit the first grand slam of his career after going 5,348 at-bats without one, sending the Seattle past Anaheim. Jeff Cirillo hit his first two home runs of the season and Bret Boone and Ruben Sierra also connected for Seattle. The Mariners won for the 13th time in 14 games.
