Tigers take two

Missouri sweeps twinbill, 16-10 and 14-4

After two days of thunderstorms reduced the three-game Kansas University-Missouri baseball series to a doubleheader Sunday at KU’s Hoglund Ballpark, the Tigers rained down hits in two blowout defeats of the Jayhawks.

Missouri (19-19 overall, 8-10 Big 12) collected 18 hits in a 16-10 victory in the first game, and another 16 hits in a 14-4 run-rule victory in the nightcap.

“Pretty much, they had us beat the whole day,” KU left fielder Ryan Baty said. “They had us beat intensity-wise, they were more disciplined at the plate and in the field. They beat us on all cylinders today.”

Missouri took full advantage of a strong wind whipping out toward center field, hitting three home runs in game one including two by Lee Laskowski and adding a pair of homers in game two.

“It was an offensive day, the way the wind was blowing,” said KU coach Bobby Randall, whose team has lost five in a row, “and that was going to be part of it, but I felt like we had too many bases on balls and too many errors.

“It wasn’t any one guy. It was certainly a team effort of inadequate play.”

Kansas (16-20, 3-14) gave up 17 walks and committed four errors, while striking out just eight Tigers in the twinbill.

The Jayhawks started the day well, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning of the first game. They were the visitors because game one was a makeup of Friday’s rainout in Columbia, Mo.

The Tigers roared back in the bottom of the second, though, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs off starter Jeff Davis (5-2).

“That was frustrating,” Randall said of giving up the early lead, “but the thing that was more frustrating was how many opportunities we had and couldn’t produce anything. We had so many opportunities to score.”

Kansas clawed to within a run, 10-9, with a five-run sixth, but Abel Newton struck out the final two Jayhawks to end the threat.

Missouri scored three in the bottom of the inning, one in the seventh and two in the eighth to put the game away.

Missouri continued its hot hitting in the second game, scoring five runs in the first inning, including a three-run homer to center field by Jody Roughton.

“Our caliber of play wasn’t very good through that first game and that’s a hard thing to turn around,” Randall said.

Kansas scored two runs in the third, but Missouri put up another five-spot in the fourth behind a grand slam by Mick Weiss, and added four more through the eighth for the run-rule victory.

“We didn’t do anything very well today,” Randall said. “We didn’t pitch well, didn’t hit well, didn’t play defense well. Our fans deserve better baseball than that.”

Kansas will return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Southwest Missouri State. The Bears defeated the Jayhawks, 15-7, March 12 in Springfield, Mo.

Notes: Game 1 lasted 3:35, the longest nine-inning game for KU in at least the past three seasons the Tigers have scored double-digits in their past five games Pat Holmes, who has spent most of his playing time as DH, saw his first action on the mound for KU with 1/3 of an inning of relief in game two.

Kansas players Lance Hayes, left, and Jason Appuhn return to their positions after chasing the second of back-to-back home runs by Missouri. The Tigers won the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader sweep, 16-10, at Hoglund Ballpark.
