Clinic seeks volunteer office assistants

Agency: Health Care Access

Address: 1920 Moodie Road.

Contact person: Betsy McCafferty, 841-5760.

Health Care Access, a clinic that serves uninsured, income-eligible people in Douglas County, needs some people to work as clinic assistants and office assistants.

Betsy McCafferty, a nurse at the clinic, said about four people were needed to help with filing, typing, answering phones and cleaning in its office. Another eight people with health-related training are needed to assist in providing health care to clients.

McCafferty said the clinic was open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except on Wednesday, when it closes at 3:30 p.m. Those wanting to volunteer will be required to fill out an application, list three references and take a tuberculosis skin test. After they are accepted, they must complete an orientation session.

Health Care Access serves an average of 1,000 people a year, with each person making an average of three visits to the clinic. The clinic provides primary health care, but can make referrals to medical specialists.

An application and more information is available on the clinic’s Web site, www.healthcareaccess.org.

Last week’s results

The Multiple Sclerosis Society received calls from about six people who wanted to help with its annual MS Walk on Saturday after the organization appeared in last week’s “How You Can Help.”

But more volunteers are needed, according to Sheri Daudet, branch manager of the Eastern Kansas Branch of the Mid America Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. An additional 15 volunteers are needed to help with the fund-raiser.

The check-in for the 8-mile walk will begin at 8 a.m. at Burcham Park, Second and Louisiana streets. The walk starts at 9 a.m. and follows a course from the park through the Kansas University campus and then back to the park for lunch. The event is typically finished by 1 p.m.

Volunteers can help at check-in tables or at intersections as crossing guards. They can put up and take down signs, help decorate, help with cleanup after the event or other tasks.

If volunteers are under 16, they must sign a waiver and be accompanied by an adult.

Those interested can call Emily Zung, 832-1731, chairman of the Lawrence walk, or Daudet, (800) 745-7148.
