Lawrence School Board

Board to adopt mandate for teacher contract nonrenewal

Bottom Line

The board will be asked to adopt a resolution that mandates 65 teachers receive formal notification their employment contracts won’t be renewed in 2002-2003.

The resolution also stipulates nonrenewal of agreements that provided 152 district staff with supplemental pay.

The resolution is mandated by state law prior to issuance of “reduction in force” letters. The board has until May 1 to give written notice.

Background

The RIF decision has essentially been approved by the board. It previously adopted a plan that identified up to $5 million in spending reductions or fee increases. The staffing cuts were included in that plan.

Other business

Possible comments by Sue Morgan, board president; Randy Weseman, superintendent; and school board members.

Consider approval of a $5,049 tuition payments for two students to attend Kaw Area Technical School. They’re taking medical office specialist and machine tool technology courses not available in Lawrence schools.

Consider adopting a resolution to declare the district’s intent to not renew contacts for certified educators and delete supplemental pay for staff.

Consider endorsement of the fringe-benefit committee’s recommendation to drop a “self-insured” health insurance plan managed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield and to contract with Coventry Health Care for the Open Access plan. The existing Delta Dental plan would be renewed.

Consider enacting a revised district technology plan, which is required by the state and is designed to serve as a road map for infusion of computers into the curriculum.

Review a report clarifying which public school activities are included in the “pay to participate” proposal drafted by the board to help the 2002-2003 budget. Fees range from $15 for orchestra to $50 for football.

Consider a $16,104 contract with Spicer’s Paper Co. of North Kansas City, Mo., for 8,800 reams of white paper for copy machines. That’s $1.83 per ream, which contains 500 pages.

Consider a $97,525 contract with Artistic Floorcovering of Lenexa to replace carpeting at Kennedy, Quail Run and Wakarusa Valley schools. The breakdown: Kennedy, $64,831; Quail Run, $28,997; and Wakarusa Valley, $3,697.

Consider a $38,955 contract with Mid-States School Equipment Co. of Lenexa to replace auditorium seating at West Junior High School.

Consider a $83,594 contract with Penny Construction of Lawrence for installation of new gymnasium bleachers at South Junior High School.

Consider spending $61,642 for audiovisual equipment VCRs, digital cameras, overhead projectors, TVs, cassette recorders for 25 school buildings. The equipment will be bought from six companies.

Consider granting preliminary approval for new policies regarding appointments to board committees, limiting public participation at board gatherings, reducing the frequency of formal evaluations of district administrative personnel and the sabbatical leave program.
