Three Topeka residents arrested Thursday are suspected of taking more than $1,000 worth of merchandise from several Lawrence stores.

The suspects  two men and a woman  were charged Friday in Douglas County District Court with one count each of felony theft.

Employees at Kohl’s Department Store, 3240 Iowa, called Lawrence Police about 7:30 p.m. Thursday after the suspects allegedly fled with clothing for which they hadn’t paid, Lt. David Cobb said.

A car and license number were reported, and an officer later stopped a black Honda matching the description in the area of Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive.

Police found clothing, compact discs, DVDs, video games, groceries and liquor inside the car, officials said. In addition to Kohl’s, police said the merchandise had come from Hastings Books, Music & Video, 1900 W. 23rd St.; Kmart, 3106 Iowa; Cork and Barrel Wine and Spirits, 2000 W. 23rd St.; and Dillon’s, 1015 W. 23rd St.

About $300 in meat was taken from Dillon’s, along with other groceries, police reported.

Total value of the merchandise from all stores was listed at $1,184.

Charged were Eric N. McChristion, 38; Lora A. Carter, 36; and Robert L. Jackson, 34. All have their next court appearances at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

McChristion was released Friday on his own recognizance. Carter was still in jail on $1,500 bond, as was Jackson on $2,000 bond.
