City to mark Earth Day with events Saturday

The city has a series of events planned Saturday to celebrate Earth Day.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., has programs starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Other activities at the center include mural painting, face painting, recycling toss and an environmental maze.

The Lawrence Transit System will enter a T bus in the Earth Day parade, which begins at 11 a.m. at South Park and travels up Massachusetts Street to Seventh Street, and ends in Buford M. Watson Jr. Park. At the park, there will be a celebration and information fair.

Household hazardous waste will be collected from 8 a.m. to noon at the Douglas County Public Works Yard, 711 E. 23rd St. Such products include paint and paint-related items, pest control products and household cleaners.

Development: ECO2 seeks public input

A committee that wants to buy land for industrial development and preservation of open space has scheduled two public meetings this month to seek support for a sales tax increase.

ECO2, a committee organized by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, supports adding a 1/4-cent sales tax to finance the property program. It has scheduled two public meetings to drum up support.

The meetings:

7 p.m. April 24 in room 200 of Mabee Hall at Baker University in Baldwin. The building also is known as Memorial Hall.

7 p.m. April 30 at the community building, 333 Elmore St. in Lecompton.

Members of ECO2 are scheduled to answer questions from the audience. Public meetings have not yet been set in Eudora and Lawrence.

Kansas University: Foundation donates money for exhibits at Dole Institute

A New York foundation has given $500,000 toward exhibits at the Dole Institute of Politics, Kansas University officials announced Tuesday.

The Starr Foundation donated the money, which will pay for a permanent exhibit of former Sen. Bob Dole’s World War II uniform and a 22-by-12 foot stained glass U.S. flag. It also will pay for a stone map of Kansas on the floor of the center’s lobby.

The 28,000-square-foot Dole Institute is under construction on KU’s West Campus. It is scheduled for dedication July 22, 2003, Dole’s 80th birthday.

The Starr Foundation was founded by Cornelius Vander Starr, who established what is now known as American International Group Inc., a family of insurance and financial service companies.

Philanthropy: Congressman to take part in annual Foundation Follies

Kansas Democrat Dennis Moore, a guitar-strumming member of the U.S. House of Representatives, will perform with Denny and the DooDahs at the 12th annual Foundation Follies.

The variety show at 8 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hall, 642 Mass., is a fund-raising event for the Lawrence Schools Foundation. The organization raises money for Lawrence public school programs.

The foundation’s educator of the year will be presented a check for $1,000 during intermission at the Follies.
