“Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” a tribute to the singer who recorded such hits as “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy,” “That’ll Be the Day” and “Words of Love,” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Lied Center.

The musical re-creates Buddy Holly’s story from his days singing country music in Lubbock, Tex., to his debut with The Crickets at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, where he was the first white act.

The tale ends with a re-creation of his last concert with Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper and Dion at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, on Feb. 2, 1959 Â the night they died in a plane crash.

The production features 23 performers; the actors also provide the music for the show. In addition to Holly’s hits, the show includes Valens’ “La Bamba” and the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.”

“Buddy” continues its run in London’s West End, where it was nominated for an Olivier Award.

The show has played on Broadway and in Australia, Toronto and San Francisco. The musical is produced by Ordway Center of the Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minn.

The show runs about 2 1/2 hours, with one intermission.
