O-South nudges Lions, 3-1

? A two-run single by Matt Galbraith with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning lifted Olathe South to a 3-1 Sunflower League baseball victory over Lawrence High on Thursday at Olathe District Activities Center.

The Lions, ranked No. 4 in Class 6A, wasted a steady pitching performance from Spence Chaney. The junior hurler, making his first start of the season, struck out four batters, allowed no walks and surrendered one earned run in six innings.

“I think we found another pitcher,” LHS coach David Petry said of Chaney, who has surrendered no walks in 91/3 innings. “What makes him successful is getting ahead of hitters and making them earn their way on base.”

Lawrence’s lone run came in the top of the second inning when Tommy Mangino’s sacrifice fly scored Paul Houle, a courtesy runner for catcher Troy Wingert.

Wingert had two of Lawrence’s five hits, including a double. Andy Flory also doubled for LHS.

The Lions (5-4) left five runners on base  all in scoring position.

“That’s very frustrating,” Petry said. “We haven’t been able to come up with key hit when we needed it.”

LHS will play host to Lincoln (Neb.) Southeast at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ice Field. Southeast will play at Free State at 1 p.m.
