Amarr’s safety doors boost company’s sales

Amarr Garage Doors is building increasing sales on its DuraSafe line of doors, products that company officials hope will revolutionize the $2.5 billion industry.

The Amarr designs create flexible hinges and joints that are so snug even a baby’s finger can’t get pinched a safety feature that could help the North Carolina-based company continue its growth in the years ahead.

Last year, as the economic slowdown continued to drain profits and force manufacturers to trim payrolls, Amarr was working around the clock to keep up with orders, even as the company was fitting DuraSafe designs into its full line of doors.

“Long term, it’s the right thing to do,” said Jeff Mick, chief operating officer. “We’re going to build the state-of-the-art product for the industry. Is it the wisest economic decision, today, to do that? That’s probably arguable. But it’s the best for the long term.”

Amarr has about 430 employees. The private company has generated “double-digit” sales growth each year since 1991, Mick said, and regularly budgets for annual increases from 10 percent to 20 percent.

Even before the complete conversion to DuraSafe designs, the pinch-resistant products account for about 20 percent of Amarr’s annual sales. That percentage will rise as conversions continue and new product lines are added at the plant.
