High School Track: Lions shine in dual against Leavenworth

They’re the long and the short of it.

Juniors Dylan McClain, a distance runner, and Chris Fulton, a sprinter, led the Lawrence High track team to 120-30 victory in a home dual against Leavenworth High on Tuesday at LHS.

Fulton won the 100-meter dash in 10.65, the 400 (51.78) and anchored the victorious 4×100 relay (45.11).

McClain won the mile in 4:40.75.

“I felt pretty good,” McClain said of his mile run. “For having it be so windy, it was a fairly good time. We’re not trying to go for school records here or anything, but we’re out here giving it our all. We’re not really rested for the meet so we’re not expecting our best times. It’s a pretty low-key meet but of course we’re giving it 110 percent.”

McClain led for nearly the entire race and wasn’t too worried about the windy conditions.

“The wind kinda gets you down, but you just have to factor it in,” he said. “It’s just something to work against. It just slows your times.”

Fulton was also affected by the wind, but received some advice on how to deal with it before the relay.

“As I walked back down,” he said, “some of my coaches I’ve ran with during the summer told me to run with my head down and that helped a little.”

Also not affecting the sprinter was a deep thigh bruise he suffered during basketball season.

“I’m over it,” Fulton said of the injury. “I heat it every day and it’s been doing better every day. I don’t feel it that much but they still want me to keep on heating it.”

Richard Mumford won the the long jump (20-714) and triple jump (39-2) for LHS. Brian Seymour won both hurdle events.

Other LHS boys winners were Justin Riley, Chad Lisher, Kyle Fowler, Bobby Brubaker, Chandler Hess and Scott Bellinger.

Mag Obiefule won the shot put (31-934) and discus (110-9) for the LHS girls. Other winners for the LHS girls were Sarah Butler, Audrey Pope, Shari Lassiter, Lauren Davis and Hallie Fitzgerald.

The Lion girls won their dual with Leavenworth, 81-65.
