University of Florida police Taser student

This doesn’t come from KU, but it’s a very interesting piece of news out of higher education across the country.Andrew Meyer, a senior at the University of Florida, was Tasered by campus police after trying to ask U.S. Senator John Kerry a question. Here’s the video:The story has been picked up internationally, and USA Today has a blog they’re updating regularly as more facts come out. So far, the university has asked for an external investigation, suspended the officers involved, and asked the district attorney to expedite review of the case. For the record, public safety officers at Kansas University do not carry Tasers, according to KU Public Safety Office spokesman Capt. Schuyler Bailey.University of Florida students are quite upset. They’ve established a Facebook group in support of Meyer and planned a protest for this afternoon. The Florida Alligator, the student newspaper at Florida, wrote a scathing editorial denouncing the actions of the police department.Interestingly, The Gainesville Sun reports, use of a Taser is only justified in Florida when there is a danger to the life of a police officer or bystander.
