Dems arrive in Denver

_Paul Davis is one of three Lawrence delegates to the Democratic National Convention who will be blogging on LJWorld.com. Check back often to see what they’re saying._DENVER – So, what do you think of Joe Biden? This seems to be the easiest way to make conversation when you’re waiting for a cab or riding in an elevator. You know that you’ll get a response because Democrats are everywhere in the Mile High City. I decided to take the scenic route to Denver and make the drive across Kansas and eastern Colorado. on the way i checked in with a few of my legislative colleagues and even ran into the Leadership Kansas class in Hays. By the way, if you ever go to Hays you must eat at Gella’s. It is a fantastic brewery with wonderful food. I marveled at the new wind farm outside Ellsworth, which is truly a sight to see. I came over a hill and suddenly 250 wind turbines were on the horizon. I still don’t understand those folks who believe wind turbines destroy the landscape. I think they’re truly beautiful. After visiting some family members in Denver, I checked into the Kansas hotel. We are sharing the Denver tech center Doubletree with the North Carolina delegation (and boy have I had fun ribbing them over our victory against the Tar Heels in the Final Four!). The number of activities going on here is simply incredible. I tried to keep a schedule at first but I’ve pretty much given that up and decided to just go with the flow. While getting ready to attend the welcome reception last night, another Kansas delegate said he had tickets to a environmental themed concert at Red Rocks (which was referred to as green rocks last night) with Sheryl Crow, Sugarland (a fantastic country band) and Dave Matthews. No way I could say no to such an invitation. The musical performances were interspersed with speeches from Senator Ken Salazar, Gov. Bill Ritter (both Colorado Democrats), Robert F. Kennedy jr. and Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia. RFK Jr. really brought down the house with his passionate speech about how America was revered around the world when his father was active in politics and how the reputation of our country that was built by so many Republican and Democratic presidents has been severely diminished by the Bush/Cheney administration. Dave Matthews was pretty amazing too.I’m off to downtown for the first session of the convention. Everyone is saying over and over again that traffic is a mess and there are long lines to get through security, so I figure I better get a head start. I’m looking forward to hearing President Jimmy Carter, Michelle Obama and, one of my favorite senators, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, tonight.
