Special Olympics Summer Games torch passes through Lawrence
In case you missed it …
An Olympic torch that began its journey in Greece passed through Lawrence on its way to the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles.
The Lawrence leg of the Unified Relay Across America — three routes meandering from east to west across the north, central and south sections of the U.S. — made a brief stop at KU’s campus Wednesday morning on its way from Topeka to Kansas City.

The torch was looping through Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma before resuming its westward trek to L.A and the July 25 opening ceremonies.
Two Lawrence police officers — Officer Leo Souders, left, and Sgt. Damon Thomas, right, pictured above holding the torch in front of the Hall Center for Humanities — assisted the group and several members of the community participated in the event, according to Lawrence Police Department spokesman Trent McKinley. Skyler McMillin, far left, was one of several local Special Olympics athletes and parents of athletes who were on hand, according to Douglas County Special Olympics.
Donna Zimmerman, a spokeswoman with Special Olympics Kansas, said law enforcement officers from California were the main escorts for the torch.
