Big day by Eudora relay teams leads to 2nd-place state track finish for EHS girls

Led by a state-championship run in the Class 4A 4×800 girls relay on Saturday afternoon, the Eudora High girls track team brought home a second-place trophy to cap off what was a stellar year for girls sports at EHS.

The Eudora High girls 4×100 relay team also played a huge role in the Cardinals’ strong team finish, recording a school record time of 50.16 seconds to take second place in their event.

EHS finished with 78 points, firmly in second place ahead of third-place Paola, with 46. Andale won the 4A girls team title with 142 points.

The state runner-up finish was the second of the school year for the Eudora girls, who also took second in basketball. The Cardinals also won league championships in cross country, basketball, softball and track and claimed state titles in cross country and softball.

Phoebe Fletcher, Mackenzie Mayer, Sydney Owens and Hanna Keltner each ran legs of the 4×800 relay team that finished in first place with a time of 10:10.05. Keltner and Owens racked up all kinds of individual points for the Cardinals throughout the two-day meet, as well.

After a strong showing on Friday in the 3,200, Keltner (third in 5:28.14) and Owens (fifth in 5:49.40) both placed in the top five of Saturday’s mile run. In the girls 800 late Saturday afternoon, Keltner (2:27.94), Fletcher (2:29.86) and Owens (2:31.57) placed third, fourth and seventh, respectively.

Later in the day, in the 4×100 relay, Leah White, Sophia Ewy, Madison Karten and Maya Pattison added their names to the EHS record books.

Pattison also took second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.49 seconds, followed by White, who finished sixth in the 100 in 12.7 seconds. Late Saturday, Pattison ran a 27.09 to take seventh place in the 200.

Eudora’s Mackenzie Mayer also finished fifth in the javelin on Saturday with a top throw of 126 feet, 2 inches.

The Eudora boys finished sixth in Class 4A with 41 points. Matthew Magette took eighth in Saturday’s high jump after clearing 6 feet, and the Cardinals’ 4×800 boys relay team of Cody Loganbill, Zachary Arnold, Parker Hurla and Jonas Staples took sixth in 8:32.17.

In the final 4A event of the day, EHS’s boys 4×400 relay team of Conor Dunback, Jonas Staples, Octavius Lyles and Adrion Seals finished second in 3:27.67.

• The Baldwin High girls 4×800 relay team finished second to Eudora on Saturday in 10:25.78. Lily Brecheisen, Riley Smith, Jana Landreth and Diana Messick teamed together to bring home the silver medal and eight team points for the Bulldogs. Messick also finished second in the girls 800 (2:24.30), Landreth just missed a medal in the 1,600 — finishing ninth in 5:50.83 — and Harper Schoendaller took eighth in the 4A girls javelin with a top throw of 115 feet, 4 inches. The BHS girls finished in ninth overall with 20 points. The Baldwin boys did not have any state qualifiers.

• Taylor Damme’s third-place finish in the javelin highlighted the day at the Class 3A level for Perry-Lecompton High on Saturday. A multi-sport athlete, Damme ripped off a throw of 132 feet, 5 inches on her sixth throw to earn five points for the Kaws. Damme was joined by PLHS high jumper Kaden Doleman, who took eighth in the boys high jump. After clearing 5-10 in one attempt, Doleman cleared both 6 feet and 6-2 on attempt No. 2 to secure the top-eight finish. The PLHS girls finished in a tie for 35th in the team standings with six points, and the Perry-Lecompton boys took 40th with one point.

• The Tonganoxie High boys team finished seventh overall with 40 team points. In the individual events, Eli Gilmore led the way with a couple of third-place finishes in the 800 (1:59.49) and the 1,600 (4:26.03). THS’s Lukas Parizek (2:00.77) also took fourth in the 800. Isaiah Holthaus took second in the long jump with a top mark of 21 feet, 9 inches. Holthaus also took third in the 300 hurdles in 40.38 seconds. The Tonganoxie girls finished 26th overall with 4.2 points. Lucy Reike finished sixth in the shot put on Saturday, with a top throw of 37 feet, 2.5 inches. And Emma Sunderland took eighth in the high jump after clearing 4-8.
