LHS golfers close season with 7th-place finish; girls soccer teams eliminated at regionals
Lawrence High senior Jacob Bartholomew shot a team-best 15-over-par 87 on Tuesday at Falcon Lakes Golf Club in Basehor as the Lions finished seventh in one of four Class 6A boys golf regionals.
Bartholomew, who tied for 28th, was followed by sophomore Gunnar Wayenberg, who shot an 89 on the 6,564-yard course to tie for 31st. Freshman Nathan Schworm carded a 90, junior Case Nicholson shot a 102, junior Macade Lewis had a 104 and junior Dallas Ostronic finished with a 106 for the Lions, who shot a combined 368.
Olathe West finished first in the region with 293 strokes. Olathe North senior Patrick Neal took the individual title by shooting a 3-under-par 69 that included just one bogey.
The top three teams in each of the four regionals qualify for the Class 6A championship, a 36-hole event that will be held beginning Monday in Dodge City. The three other Class 6A regionals were held Monday. Free State finished third at Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Milford to advance to next week’s final.
LHS, FSHS soccer eliminated
One day after keeping their seasons alive with early-round playoff wins, the Lawrence High and Free State High girls soccer teams lost in separate regional semifinals to end their seasons.
No. 19 seed LHS lost 8-0 at Blue Valley West to finish the season at 1-17 overall.
Sixteenth-seeded Free State traveled to top-seeded Washburn Rural and lost 5-0. The Firebirds finished the season with a 2-15-1 record.
