KU head coach Matt Ulmer speaks to sophomore Grace Nelson during the Jayhawks' match against Texas Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in Lawrence.
The Kansas volleyball team dominated West Virginia in a road match on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-18, 25-17).
WVU’s block put up little resistance against KU, which hit .484 and only got blocked a single time. Four Jayhawks reached double-digit kills, led by Grace Nelson, who had 13 to go with eight digs.
Rhian Swanson and Jovana Zelenović tallied 11 each, and Reese Ptacek recorded 10 on 15 total attacks. Katie Dalton posted 45 assists in the three-set match.
The Mountaineers got 11 kills from redshirt junior opposite hitter Trinity Sheridan, and no one else recorded more than seven. KU was also responsible for five service aces to WVU’s one.
Nelson and Zelenović had two kills apiece in a key run that boosted the Jayhawks’ advantage to 12-6 in the first set. WVU didn’t get particularly close from then on — with the Mountaineers trailing 19-14, Alexis Finnvold committed a service error and Zelenović sent back-to-back aces to the floor. KU eventually claimed the first set by a nine-point margin.
In the second game, WVU got within a point at 14-13 on a kill by Maddy McGath and within two at 17-15 on an attack error by Dalton, but conceded five straight, primarily with libero Ryan White serving for KU. The Mountaineers held off one set point thanks to a service error, but Ptacek’s block on Sheridan sealed the deal.
Swanson dominated early in the third set, as her kills accounted for half of KU’s first 10 points as the Jayhawks jumped ahead by seven. WVU, aided by a service error and a pair of attack errors, scored four straight, but didn’t get any closer for the remainder of the match.
KU improved to 17-8 on the year and 8-3 in league play. The Jayhawks will next host Colorado at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The Buffaloes, picked 10th in the preseason poll, are instead 10-1 in conference play and beat a ranked Baylor team 3-1 on Friday.
