Eudora, Perry-Lecompton advance in state football playoffs; Baldwin ends season with win

Eudora and Perry-Lecompton football teams both advanced to the second round of the state playoffs on Friday night and winless Baldwin capped its season with a victory.

Perry-Lecompton knocked off Sabetha, 28-21, in Round 1 of the Class 3A playoffs, improving to 6-3 on the season.

PLHS quarterback Gunnar Ball threw three touchdown passes and ran for another and the Kaws held off a late rally by Sabeth, which trailed 20-6 at halftime but scored 14 fourth-quarter points to make things interesting.

The Kaws’ lone second-half score came on a 3-yard TD pass from Ball to Kael Gorski. Those two hooked up for scores twice on Friday, and Ty Williams snagged the other PLHS touchdown reception.

Ball threw for 281 yards and led the PLHS offense to 372 total yards. Gorski (106), Williams (50) and Jackson Payne (65) all topped 50 yards receiving in the victory.

Friday’s win earned PLHS a Round 2 showdown with unbeaten Holton (9-0), a 58-18 winner over Santa Fe Trail on Friday night. The Round 2 matchup will take place at Holton.

Eudora, meanwhile, rolled to victory at home in the Class 4A bracket behind the strength of three Gage Hayden rushing touchdowns and two more scores by Hayden through the air.

Adrion Seals hauled in one of the TD passes, from 54 yards out, and Jaiden Bender grabbed the other, which was capped off by a two-point conversion pass from Hayden to Jaden Hamm.

EHS running back Brayden Beerbower also added two rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals, who dominated the final three quarters of Friday’s game on both offense and defense.

Eudora (5-4) will take on third-seeded Atchison (8-1) next Friday night at AHS. Atchison knocked off No. 14 seed Fort Scott, 14-6, in Friday’s opening round.

Bulldogs win

After going several weeks without scoring a single point, the Baldwin High football team finished the 2021 season in style on Friday night, exploding for 46 points in a winning effort over Royal Valley.

Although the Bulldogs (1-7) did not qualify for the Class 4A state playoff bracket, they were paired up with Royal Valley for one final game for both teams. And boy did they make it count.

BHS won 46-42 behind solid play from quarterback Jack Harvey, wide receivers Sam Darnell and Cole Mahaffey and running back Conner Murry.

“All had outstanding games,” BHS coach Bob Lisher said. “And our O-line played great, the best it had been all year. Offensively, we executed very well.”

Tonganoxie bows out

Seventh-seeded Tonganoxie was knocked off, 34-20, at home by 10th-seeded Bishop Miege in the Class 4A bracket on Friday night.

Behind the strength of a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Trevor McGraw to Isaiah Holthaus, the Chieftains tied the game at 20 heading into the fourth quarter. But Miege scored two fourth-quarter TDs and kept THS out of the end zone to advance to next week’s second round.

The two teams were also tied, 13-13, at halftime.

Tonganoxie closes the season with a 4-5 overall record.
