Letter to the editor: Latin most valuable

To the editor:

I went to a high school so small that algebra and geometry were offered alternately every other year, but we did have Latin. I have no doubt that this contributed to students from Lyndon High School capturing first, second and third places in statewide competitions in English grammar and vocabulary all three years I was in high school. I consider it the most valuable class I took in high school or college, as it was the basis for not only learning the finer points of the English language, but other languages as well; certainly it was a great help in the science classes I took for my nursing degree.

Please consider Latin’s importance in understanding so many other areas of education in your decisions regarding budget reductions, as well as its small effect on the budget — one teacher serving both high schools!
