Letter to the editor: Teach responsibility

To the editor:

It wasn’t that long ago that when a student lost a book, he/she was responsible for the cost of replacing it. It appears that current school district officials believe that such accountability no longer applies in the digital age (“District to consider purchasing $278K in tech accessories,” Journal-World, March 25). As one who warned against issuing this technology to students on a gratis basis, I find it highly disturbing that the district wants to spend more than a quarter million (tax) dollars replacing items lost or damaged by students. Why aren’t students held responsible? Such wanton largesse is an affront to tax-paying citizens of Lawrence.
