KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A northeast Kansas man pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge for his participation in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Mark Roger Rebegila, 32, of St. Marys, pleaded guilty to parading, demonstrating or picketing in the Capitol building. In exchange for his plea, three other charges were dropped.

He is scheduled to be sentenced March 10 and faces a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Rebegila is the third of eight Kansas residents charged in the Capitol riot case to plead guilty, The Kansas City Star reported. The other five cases are pending in the court system.

When Rebegila was interviewed by the FBI in St. Marys on Jan. 15, he said he entered the Capitol after others had crashed the barriers and crowds were going inside, according to a probable cause affidavit.

“Rebegila further stated that he asked a police officer if he could go inside and the officer shrugged his shoulders,” the document said.

Rebegila said he recorded video on his phone as he walked through the Capitol but later deleted it because “he did not want to get into trouble,” the affidavit said.
