KCK crews search Kansas River for missing 11-year-old girl

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Emergency crews from Kansas City, Kansas, continued over the weekend to search the Kansas River for an 11-year-old girl who went missing in its waters and is presumed to have drowned.

Several boats and at least 10 firefighters searched the river Sunday, a day after witnesses said the girl was pulled under the water while trying to retrieve a beach ball, the Kansas City Star reported.

A family had been playing with the ball near a sand bar on the river near Interstate 435 and Woodend Avenue when the incident happened, officials said. An adult and two other minors tried to save the girl, but ended up also having to be rescued, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Hawley said.
