A 21-year old Lawrence man was arrested early Saturday after allegedly leading law enforcement on a chase on Kansas Highway 10 that reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s office spokesman George Diepenbrock said in an email to the Journal-World that at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a request for backup from Eudora police who were conducting a car stop. As deputies were on their way, Diepenbrock said, Eudora police told them that the vehicle was fleeing westbound on K-10 toward Lawrence, and that one of their officers had been “almost trapped” by the driver’s side door of the vehicle as it sped off.

Diepenbrock said the vehicle continued westbound into Lawrence at more than 100 mph and occasionally was driving on the wrong side of the road. The pursuit continued along Haskell/East 1500 Road, he said, and a deputy performed a “tactical vehicle intervention” in the 1500 block of North 1100 Road to disable the fleeing vehicle.

The suspect, Jante’ Elijah Kelly, 21, of Lawrence, was taken into custody without further incident, Diepenbrock said. Kelly suffered minor injuries and was taken to LMH Health to be examined as a precaution. According to jail booking logs, he was booked into the Douglas County Jail on Saturday morning on suspicion of battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and interference with a law enforcement officer. He is being held without bond.
