2 people rescued from Clinton Lake after kayaking accident

Two people were rescued Monday afternoon from Clinton Lake after the kayaks they were in overturned, a law enforcement official said.

At about 2 p.m. Monday, the two kayakers’ boats tipped over, and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a boat ramp at 1395 East 550 Road to assist them, Sgt. Kristen Channel of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office told the Journal-World via email. The two kayakers were found clinging to tree branches a few hundred feet from shore in the northwest portion of Clinton Lake, Channel said.

An officer from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism was then able to launch a boat and rescue the kayakers, Channel said. Neither of the kayakers was injured in the incident.

Although Clinton State Park is open, the lake and areas near it have been closed the past several days because of high water levels. According to Clinton State Park’s Facebook page, all three of the lake’s boat ramps, the marina, the swim beach and several trails remained closed on Monday.
