A pair of KU organizations will be preparing tax returns for Douglas County residents for free, if they meet certain income guidelines.

University of Kansas law students will provide free tax return preparation to Douglas County residents who make less than $60,000 per year and don’t itemize their returns. The program is offered through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Services are offered on several dates and locations, including: from 6 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Mondays at Green Hall on the KU campus; from 3 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Green Hall; 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays at the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, 1600 Haskell; and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at Green Hall.

Representatives with the KU organization Legal Services for Students also are providing tax preparation services. U.S. residents with less than $73,000 in income can use software provided by Legal Services for Students to file their tax returns for free. KU employees in any income range can use the software to file for free through LSS.

Sessions generally occur at Room 413 in Summerfield Hall on the KU campus. Days and times of the sessions vary. To see a complete schedule, go to legalservices.ku.edu/tax-filing-workshops

Both programs generally are closed the week of spring break, March 13 through March 19. Tax filing deadline day is April 18.
