Artists in the Lawrence and Kansas City area can compete for up to $6,000 in funding to create new public art pieces as part of a “rocket grant” program offered by a KU museum.

The Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas is teaming up with the Charlotte Street Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts to fund art pieces that will be installed in “under-the-radar” public spaces.

The Rocket Grant program is open to artists within an 80-mile radius of the Kansas City metro area. The grant places an emphasis on creating art that can be placed at locations other than museums, galleries or art districts.

The program will begin accepting letters of interest from artists on Friday and will continue accepting applications through June 27. Grant officials will host an informational meeting at 6 p.m. on May 26 at the Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Mississippi St. Another meeting also will take place at 6 p.m. on May 31 at the Charlotte Street Foundation Library, 3333 Wyoming St., in Kansas City, Missouri.
