This weekend’s offerings include art, choral music, standup comedy, hometown sports, holiday markets, free guitar lessons, turkey dinners, history, science, board games, a book club geared to introverts and more.

FRIDAY

• “How the Light Gets In: An Interactive Art Exhibit” explores the thoughts and experiences of formerly incarcerated women reentering society. The exhibit, beginning Friday and continuing through Jan. 8, is offered in two parts – one at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St., and the other at the Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Mississippi St. See lawrence.bibliocommons.com for more details.

• People wanting assistance in enrolling for health insurance through the Federally Facilitated Marketplace are invited to talk with a certified application counselor at the Lawrence Public Library Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, noon-4 p.m. No registration or appointment needed.

• The second annual Community Resource Fair takes place this afternoon, 2-6 p.m., at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. Representatives from various social service agencies relating to retirement, health care, utility assistance, pet resources and more will be providing information. The event will also include a giveaway of winter coats and accessories, free cups of coffee and hot chocolate, snack packs, kids’ play area and a visit from the Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobile Bus providing vaccines, biometric screenings and nutrition education. • In the mood for some insightful standup comedy? The Lawrence Arts Center’s Microcinema Series and the Free State Festival present “An Evening with Hari Kondabolu” at 7 p.m., 940 New Hampshire St. See lawrenceartscenter.org for more information and tickets.

• KU men’s basketball tips off against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse. The game will be shown on TV screens across Lawrence, including the big screen on the main stage at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St.; see libertyhall.net for details.

• Grammy winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and civil rights icon Mavis Staples will be appearing at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive.

SATURDAY

• The season’s final Saturday Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market happens from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Prep for your holiday meals and stock your pantry for the winter months, 824 New Hampshire St.

• Pendleton’s Country Market, 1446 East 1850 Road, will offer its Holiday Open House Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and again the following weekend, Nov. 26-27. Local farmers and artisans will have numerous items available for purchase; see vendor list at www.pendletons.com.

• Budding musicians can register at lawrence.bibliocommons.com for sessions of the John Jervis Memorial Guitar School, where local instructors will offer free 25-minute guitar and ukulele lessons at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. Openings for novice, intermediate and advanced players between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

• The Douglas County Democratic Party will hold an election overview at 10 a.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. Following the program, the central committee will meet to elect officers; the public is welcome to observe, and nominations from the floor are permitted. • Instruction and materials will be provided at “Art for All: Handmade Greeting Cards,” 10 a.m.-noon, Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. Artists of all ages will learn to produce greeting cards suitable for holiday giving. This guided workshop is free and open to the public.

• Historic Lecompton’s Annual Christmas Tree Display is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the Territorial Capital Museum, 640 E. Woodson Ave., Lecompton.

• The Silent Book Club of Lawrence holds its November meeting today, 10:30 a.m., at Z’s Divine Espresso, 2351 W. 31st St. Bring your current book; there’s no assigned reading or discussion, just reading together in quiet camaraderie.

• All are welcome to attend the Community Harvest Dinner at the Central United Methodist Church of Lawrence, 1501 Massachusetts St. A turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served noon-2:30 p.m. Donations accepted.

• The Watkins Museum of History presents “Potter’s Field History Harvest,” 1-2:30 p.m. Participants will meet at the museum, 1047 Massachusetts St., for a presentation on the history of the Oak Hill Cemetery Potter’s Field. Attendees are invited to bring relevant stories, photographs, documents, etc., to share. This event will also be livestreamed on the Watkins’ social media pages.

• It’s the final home football game of the season as KU takes on the Texas Longhorns at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Join the crowd on the hill or at your favorite watering hole.

• The Third Saturday Beers and Board Games event will be held at 6 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vermont St. Bring your own beverages and snacks; organizers will provide tables and some board games (but feel free to bring your own). The event is free; park in the back lot and enter through the doors on the southeast corner.

• The Lawrence Children’s Choir (Choristers, Tour and Ambassador choirs) will provide a free “performance preview” at 7 p.m., in preparation for Sunday’s fall concert. The public is welcome to attend at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 New Hampshire St.

SUNDAY

• “Pop Up Science: Super Science Sleuths” kicks off at noon today at the KU Natural History Museum, 1345 Jayhawk Blvd. Learn about the scientific method, forming hypotheses and making observations while solving an imaginary crime. This free event is open to all ages.

• The Cadenza, Choristers, Tour Choir and Ambassador Choir will join forces for the Lawrence Children’s Choir Fall Concert, 3 p.m., Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 New Hampshire St. A limited number of tickets are available at lcc2022fallconcert.eventbrite.com.

TUESDAY

• Local performers will read a new original play with music from local musician Jeff Stolz at 7 p.m. at the 10th & Mass Studios. “The Exultant Stag” describes the challenge of altering a recurring nightmare based in childhood trauma. This pop-up reading is offered free of charge, but donations are accepted, 1000 Massachusetts St., Suite D.
