The autumn migration of monarch butterflies has arrived — and with it, the popular tagging event in the wetlands of southern Lawrence.

The purpose of tagging, or affixing a small sticker to the butterflies’ wings, is to help researchers collect data on the species’ migration and population.

At the event — slated for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center, 1365 North 1250 Road — members of the public will be provided with nets and a little tutorial on how to catch and tag the butterflies.

The free event is suitable for people of all ages. It’s sponsored by Monarch Watch, the Jayhawk Audubon Society and the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center.
