A Douglas County farmer recently earned recognition as one of the top young farmers in the country.

Scott Thellman, owner of Juniper Hill Farms, finished in the top 10 for the American Farm Bureau’s annual Achievement Award, Cole Staudt, a spokesman for the American Farm Bureau, told the Journal-World Friday. The award recognizes young farmers and ranchers who have excelled and exhibited superior leadership abilities, according to a news release from the farm bureau.

As the Journal-World previously reported, the Kansas Farm Bureau named Thellman the Young Farmer and Rancher of the Year in 2019, when he was 28.

Thellman owns 50 acres in the Kansas River valley, where he raises vegetables, half of them organic. He also grows 400 acres of hay and about 100 acres of organic and conventional row crops on rented ground.

Thellman sells specialty crops, including organic spring mix, lettuce, watermelon, pumpkins and winter squash.
