Despite the cancellation of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade and Irish Road Bowling event, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee presented a record total of $100,000 to its three 2020 children’s charities.

Every year, the committee raises money to support Douglas County children in need. This year’s beneficiaries are Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, an early childhood book program with an affiliate in Douglas County; Positive Bright Start, an early childhood center that offers mental and behavioral health therapy for children; and Tenants to Homeowners, which develops permanently affordable workforce housing.

The three organizations each received $33,333.33, a number that reflects the committee’s 33rd year.

Kay Traver, the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade secretary, said the organization was able to make a record amount of donations this year partly because many people did not seek reimbursements for the canceled Irish Road Bowling event. In addition, the committee was able to save the money it usually has to pay the city in order to put on the parade.

Since 1988, the committee has raised over $1.2 million for more than 50 local charities.
