City compost facility to open for the season

The City of Lawrence Compost Facility will be open to the public beginning Saturday.

Residents can drop off brush or yard waste and purchase compost or wood chips from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday through mid-December, weather permitting, according to a news release from the city. The compost facility is located at 1420 East 11th St. There are fees for both services, and all transactions are cash only.

Residents may drop off brush and other yard waste starting at $5 per small truckload. Larger trucks and trailers may be subject to additional fees. Acceptable items include leaves, grass clippings, garden waste, and prunings from trees and shrubs. Tree trunks and large limbs must be no longer than 4 feet and no more than 8 inches in diameter.

All materials must be loose, i.e. not contained in plastic bags, bundles or ties. Materials not accepted at the Compost Facility include lumber, pallets, sod, stones, rope, fill dirt, food waste, metal and plastic.

Compost and wood chips may be purchased for $10 per small truckload. Larger trucks and trailers may be subject to additional fees. Residents must bring a shovel or other tools, as compost and wood chip purchases are self-loaded, except for certain dates. City staff will be on-site to load vehicles and trailers with loading equipment on April 4, May 2, June 6, July 11, Aug, 1, Sept. 5 and Oct. 3.
