Stream advisory lifted for Brush Creek following sewage release

A stream advisory for Brush Creek in Lawrence has been lifted following a recent release of sewage into the creek.

Following heavy rainfall over the weekend, the city released rainwater and sewage into the creek to prevent backup into the sanitary sewer collection system upstream of Pump Station 9, which is near the intersection of 31st Street and Kasold Drive, according to a previous city news release. The city advised residents and their pets not to have contact with creek water in that area and downstream of that area.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment lifted the advisory, the city announced in a news release Thursday. The release states that city staff have been monitoring the water quality in Brush Creek consistent with KDHE protocol and that water quality tests show total coliform and E. Coli levels in the creek are back to normal levels.
