To mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month and shed light on how violence affects the community, the group #BeMoreLikeClaire is organizing a candlelight vigil next month.

The event is slated for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 6 on the east side of South Park in downtown Lawrence. According to a release from the nonprofit, the vigil will provide an opportunity for the community to remember victims, honor survivors and explore ways to act and make a difference.

Live music, speakers and the candlelight vigil are set to begin at 6:15 p.m., but some activities will start before then.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., attendees can create a T-shirt for the Clothesline Project, a public exhibit displaying shirts decorated by survivors and those who have lost loved ones to violence, or visit with local organizations to learn more about community involvement opportunities. Organizations including the Willow Domestic Violence Center, Children’s Advocacy Center of Douglas County, Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and the Ballard Center will be on site sharing resources.

Those who wish to participate in the Clothesline Project should plan to bring a white or light-colored T-shirt that can be decorated with a story or message of solidarity. Markers, clothespins and extra shirts will be available at the event.

The Lawrence nonprofit works to carry on the legacy of its namesake, Claire VanLandingham, a 27-year-old University of Louisville graduate who was killed by her ex-boyfriend.
