Gather information

Kansas Appleseed champions laws and policies that support vulnerable and excluded Kansans. Join us in our advocacy work as a volunteer research assistant. Immediate needs include developing a mailing list for Kansas schools to facilitate our staff sharing timely information regarding students and immigration-related laws. Research via internet and/or phone calls to collect names, titles, addresses, and email addresses. Calls can be made from our location in downtown Lawrence, during regular business hours, or from your location. Assistance needed with approximately 40 calls by early-mid March. Attention to detail to accurately record information and good phone skills are needed. After this project there may be opportunities for ongoing research assistance, depending on organization needs and volunteer interest. Please contact Lori Johns at ljohns@kansasappleseed.org or at 856-0917 for more information.

Spread the word

The Lawrence Public Library is looking for volunteers to assist in marketing one of their events. Julia Alvarez, author of “In the Time of the Butterflies” and “Return to Sender,” will speak at the Lied Center on March 5, as part of the NEA Big Read. Volunteers are needed to hang up posters in businesses downtown to spread the word about her upcoming visit. You can help out largely on your own schedule; however, the posters need to be up by Wednesday. A quick orientation, a list of businesses to visit and supplies will be provided. If interested, contact Kelly Francis at volunteer@lawrencepubliclibrary.org or at 843-3833, ext. 125.

Mentor students

The Lawrence College and Career Center prepares students for the future through hands-on learning experiences in an innovative, engaging environment. With direct engagement with business and industry leaders, students have access to technology and curriculum that is relevant and useful. The Lawrence College and Career Center seeks business and industry representatives to mentor students who are working on real-world projects in a specific career area. Mentors are asked to meet/communicate with students once a week to discuss the project, provide technical support and advise on client relationships. Teachers from Lawrence Public Schools provide support for mentors and students. A mentor application is required and is available at usd497.org/C3Mentorship. Please contact Patrick Kelly at pkelly@usd497.org or at 832-5000, ext. 2405, for more information.
