LHS’ Abromeit, FSHS doubles advance to Day 2

? Lawrence High junior Elliott Abromeit posted a 2-2 singles record Friday in the opening day of the Kansas 6A state boys tennis tournament at the College Boulevard Activities Center.

Abromeit fell to Manhattan’s Bryan Armebrust, 6-1, 6-3, before edging Shawnee Mission South Nick Claerhout, 9-8. The LHS junior lost to Claerhout to close out Monday’s regional tournament at Rock Chalk Park, and came back from a 7-2 deficit to get revenge on Friday.

“That was quite an amazing match,” LHS coach Chris Marshall said.

Abromeit followed up the victory over Claerhout with a 9-5 win against Kyle Hand of Junction City, before losing to Olathe South’s Conner Petty to end the day.

The 2-2 performance assured Abromeit a top-12 finish at state, and he will be back at it today against Shawnee Mission East’s Billy Louiselle at 8 a.m.

Free State had two doubles teams competing on Friday in Ian Pultz-Earle/Erik Czapinski and Seamus Ryan/Jonah Pester.

Pultz-Earle/Czapinski went 3-2 on the day, and will be back in action at 8 a.m. today with a chance to place ninth.

The No. 1 FSHS doubles tandem swept Brandon Leininger/James Gibson of Wichita West, 6-0, 6-0, and shut out Dodge City’s Sebastian Mejie/Richard Rodriguez, 9-0.

Ryan/Pester started the day with a three-set win over Maize’s Colton Slusser/Kaden Jobe, but dropped the next two matches to end their run.
